The engineers were trying to connect the Mahalaxmi Area to Worli by constructing Breach Candy. But their repeated attempts on laying foundation failed due to violent tides and they decided to drop the plan. Suddenly on one night, the goddess Mahalaxmi appeared in Chief engineer's dream who ordered him to dig out for her idol on the site of the beach where he would find the idol of her and instructed him to make a shrine for her at that place and granted a boon that he would get success if he built her a temple. As instructed by Goddess Mahalaxmi he made a search to recover the statue and then he established the temple and installed the idol of Mahalaxmi. Soon after the construction of the temple, his efforts on constructing Breach Candy was completed without a hitch.

Your day trip to Mumbai is incomplete without a visit to Mahalaxmi temple. The architecture of Mahalaxmi Temple Mumbai is quiet stunning which dates back to victorian era. The main gateway of the temple is richly ornamented. Inside the temple you will find shrines of several Hindu goddesses. The main three idols are adorned with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces. The Goddess Mahalaxmi here is a 'Swayambhu'(self-made) and the tourist rarely gets opportunity to see the original idol which is not carved but have an imprint on stone. If you can able to make at the temple around 9.30 PM you have a chance to get a dharshan of the original idol on which the decorated masks are removed and is opened for dharshan for about 15 to 20 minutes for the devotees. After this the temple will be closed. Everyday the temples opens at 6.00 AM and Abhisheka(bathing) for the idols is done and after which the idols are decorated with ornaments and opens for dharshan for first Aarti.

If you want to perform any puja or want to make any offerings for the goddess, you will find a number of flower shops and stalls on the entrance of the temple which sells flowers, garlands, incense sticks, coconut, fruits from where you can get all that needed for offering puja to the Goddess.

The beauty of the temple with the waves of the Arabian Sea on the back of the holy shrine of Mahalaxmi temple gives a glorious panoramic view and makes the temple as one of the wonderful tourist attraction in Mumbai.
