Padma Bhushan Harivansh Rai Bacchan - A Legendry Poet


Harivansh Rai Bacchan, father of Amitabh Bacchan, the famous Hindi poet is very well known for his poetries like Madhushala, Agneepath etc. He is a Padma Bhushan recipient, who changed his surname to show his disapproval towards the caste system of the society. Who is Harivansh Rai Bacchan


For the layman he is the father of Amitabh Bacchan. But for the lovers of Hindi literature, he is the real "Bacchan"! His real name is Harivansh Rai Shrivastav. He took birth in a village near Allahabad, UP. His father's name is Pratap Narayan Shrivastav and mother's name is Saraswati Devi. Because of his contribution to the literature, he was awarded with the honor called "Bacchan".

Harivansh Rai Bacchan's Personal Life


Harivansh Rai Bacchan was born on 27th November, 1907 in Uttar Pradesh. He completed his education from Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. At the age of 19, he married to Shyama. This marriage does not last long as Shyama dies of TB after 10 years of marriage. After that Harivansh Rai Bacchan married to Teji in the year 1941. They have two sons, Amitabh and Ajitabh. Haribansh Rai Bacchan took his last breath on 18th January, 2003. In his life time he has been awarded with so many awards and honors. In the year 1969, he has been awarded the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award. In the year 1976, he has been awarded with Saraswati Samman and Padma Bhushan. In the year1994 the UP Government awarded him the "Yash Bharati" sanman. He is also a proud recipient of Soviet Land Nehru Award and Lotus Award.

Poetries of Bacchan


Harivansh Rai Bacchan was not in support of the caste system. This is the reason, why he changed his sons surname to Bacchan rather than Srivastav! His thinking towards the caste system has been cleared with his most popular poetry "Madhushala". In fact he made a trio logy of poetries with "Madhushala", "Madhubala" and "Madhu Kalas". His other beautiful works involves "Agneepath.", "Kya Bhulu Kya Yaad Karun", "Beet Gayi So Baat Gayi", "Do Chattane" etc. His last poetry is "Ek November 1984" which is a tribute to the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi!
