The history of Gateway of India

Gateway of India is very popular monument of Mumbai. This building is situated at the southern end of Mumbai. Thousands of people come here every day to see this beautiful architecture made by Britishers. Gateway of India Gateway of India is 26 meters high. This place was a common place for fishermens but afterwards it turned into landing seaport of Britishers. This monument was made to welcome the visitors who first come to Bombay. The style of architecture in this monument is both a mixture or Hindu and Muslim culture. The total cost in making this monument was 2.1 million INR. George Wittet was the architect who was involved in making this beautiful building.

The central dome of Gate way of India is nearly 15m in diameter and is 26 m in its height from ground.This monument is attached to Apollo Bunder. The gateway of India was made to welcome the visit of Queen Mary and King George V. The final design of the monument was given by George Wittet. The foundation of The Gateway of India got completed in 1920, and the construction of this monument was completed in 1924. This monument was inaugurated on 4th of December by Viceroy, the governal General of India of that time.

One can easily reach Gateway of India from CST station of Mumbai. The gateway of India is just 2.5kms away from CST station of Mumbai. You can either take a taxi from their or even reach there by simple walk.

You can even reach here from Church Gate station. Then the distance is 2.4 kms from Church Gate Station and the Gateway of India.
