Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born in Rantagiri, Maharashtra. Here you can read a small Bal Gangadhar Tilak biography. Bal Gangadhar Tilak Date of Birth is 23rd July, 1856. His father’s name is Gangadhar Ramachandra Tilak, who was a teacher and a scholar of Sanskrit literature. He was a Brahman by caste. At the age of 10, because of his father's transfer, he has been re-located to Pune. In the same year, he lost his mother. His father also died when he was 16 years old. When he was studying in matriculation, he tied the knot. His wife’s name is Satyabhama. She was just 10 years old at that time. Tilak continued his study and completed degree in arts in the year 1877 and pursued his career in law.

With time, Tilak became a strong critic of the education system. He believed and advocates the theory that “every Indian should be taught about our culture”. Based on these principles, he founded an education society called Deccan Education Society. He also started voicing his feelings through two of his weekly publications. Slowly he became the most favourite among the masses, and came to be honoured as Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He was so popular that even children could answer questions like who was Lokmanya and who created All India Home Rule League.

The popularity of Bal Gangadhar Tilak led him to be a member of National Congress in 1890. He than strongly involve himself in activities that can reform the society. He strongly writes and criticizes the evil customs such as child marriage and welcomes the concepts of remarriage of widows. Because of his strong opinions and popularity, the British government put him behind the bar, with charges of breaking the law! He was sentenced imprisonment of one and a half year. But the imprisonment can't stop his spirit. Once he freed from jail, he started another movement called Swadeshi Movement. During that period, he coined the slogan Swaraj is my birth right and I shall have it. It became a craze among the Indians.

Later on 1906, he was arrested and jailed for six years. During his tenure in prison, he wrote the book called Gita-Rahashya. His popularity and believe creates a split in the congress. He opposed the views of Gopal Krishna Gokhale but finally found supporters in Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai. The trio used to be referred as Lal Bal Pal. Later he tried to bridge gap when he released from the prison. But he finally gave up and creates an organization in the name of All India Home Rule League. The only motto of this organization was Freedom.

He was the first Congress leader to suggest that Hindi should be the sole national language of India. He was also the one who made, Ganesh Puja in Mumbai Maharashtra and Siva Jayanti in Mumbai Maharashtra as social festival. Today these are one of the greatest festivals in Mumbai.

On 1st August, 1920 he took his last breath. Mahatma Gandhi paid a tribute this leader by referring to him as The Maker of Modern India.
