Ganesh Chaturthi and Mumbai


Lord Ganesha is known as Ganpati Bappa here. The great festival of Mumbai has been started.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is started. This festival is celebrated with great devotion in whole over India, even outside India. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in honour of the birth of Lord Ganesha and continues for 10 days.

Ganesh Chaturthi is famous in Mumbai. Marathi people worship 'Ganpati Bappa'. Almost in every Maharashtrian house Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated. They put the idol of Ganesha in their house for 10 days and daily puja will be performed. In Mumbai other state people will participate in this puja. Marathi people are normally religious. They invite their friends, relatives, colleagues in their house during the festival. Their invitation is very cordial, not simply a formality. They expect the invitees to visit heir house during the festival. Presently people from Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, and Punjab residing at Mumbai are also performing puja of 'Ganpati Bappa' at their houses.

Lalbaug, Lower Parel, Dadar areas of Mumbai are famous for Ganesh Chaturthi. Big idols of Lord Ganesha would be placed in Sarbajanin puja pandels and different clubs ( known as mandal) organize the puja. The most important thing about these Sarbajanin puja is that every thing is so well organized and disciplined.

Among the celebrities of Mumbai, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated at the Mahim residence of Nana Patekar. Ganesh Chaturthi at R.K.Studio at Chembur from the time of Raj Kapoor is very famous.

At the end of 10 days, at the end of the festival the idol would be dip in the Arabian Sea. This is a whole night program. Huge procession with light would march towards Shivaji park Chowpatti (beach) or Girgaun Chowpatti with the slogan 'Ganpati Bappa moriya, purcha barsi laukari aa'. In some procession number of white horses would escort the procession. Before immersion of the idol, they perform a fantastic arti. Every body would sing 'Jai Jai deva Ganpati…' .
