Maharashtra Navnirman Sena established by Raj Thackerey in 2006 has done a lot of activities so far. Following are a few of them which got national recognition.

Violent opposition of Abu Azmi in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly


As many as 13 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidates won MLA seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections 2009. During the oath taking in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, MNS had demanded that candidates take oath only in Marathi. But still, Abu Azmi started to take the oath in Hindi. Hearing the Hindi words, MNS candidates got furious and started opposing strongly.
One Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Ramesh Wanjale pulled the mike down. One of the candidate Shishir Shinde tried to hit Abu Azmi. Some of them used foul language. And the entire assembly was disrupted by this event.
4 MNS candidates were suspended for 4 years from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The suspended MNS MLAs are Ram Kadam, Ramesh Wanjale, Shishir Shinde and Vasant Gite.


Violence against north Indians


In February, 2008 Raj Thackeray gave a speech regarding the entry of north Indians specially from UP and Bihar. This led to a huge outburst and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists took to violence. They beat up north Indian vendors and shopkeepers and workers from UP and Bihar. This resulted into a lot of loss specially for the construction and furnishing areas where most of the workers are from UP and Bihar. This resulted in police action against a number of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray had delivered a speech which caused this outbreak.


Violence against north Indians in Railway Entrance Exams


The All India Railway recruitment exam was conducted in the western India in Mumbai. A large number of north Indian students were giving exam from Mumbai. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers launched an attack on these students to send a message that only the Marathi speaking candidates should sit for the exam from Mumbai. Many students were injured and lot of public property was damaged.


Effect of MNS on Jet Airways


In October 2008, Raj Thackeray threatened Jet Airways in a letter. He said that if Marathi employees are not hired, he will launch an attack through Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers. Due to this threat, Jet Airways removed almost 1000 employees and then hired later on. This resulted in a victory of MNS. The hired staff was mostly Marathi speaking population and so Raj Thackeray's threat worked as claimed by MNS.


Effect of MNS on Infosys Technologies


Due to Raj Thackeray's attack on north Indians, the construction of the new buildings of Infosys were affected. As a result almost 3000 positions which were to be given in Pune had to accommodated in Mysore and Bangalore temporarily. This happened because most of the construction workers were from UP and Bihar and north India. So, they fled off after the outbreak of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. As a result the buildings construction of Infosys Technologies was affected and got delayed significantly. So, the plans of shifting employees had to be changed.


Arrest of MNS chief Raj Thackeray


After huge debate in Parliament and a lot of pressure from MPs and MLAs, the issue of arrest of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was put forth in the Parliament. After a lot of pressure, a warrant was issued against Raj Thackeray in October 2008. On 21st October, 2008 Raj Thackeray was arrested amidst huge public anger and frustration. He was charged for making threatening and protesting speeches. He spent an entire day and a night in jail. He got bail the next morning. This move by the Maharashtra Government in fact increased his popularity and he got great publicity through the entire event of arrest. The public support he received was massive.
