The movie Once upon a Time in Mumbai depicts Mumbai in the 1970s.
The complete shoot of the movie is based on the fashion of that time, jewellery, cars, hair styles and moustaches all are used to create this feeling.
The story has basically inspired from Daud Abrahim and how he became an underworld don.
Emraan Hashmi plays this character in negative role while Ajay Devgan plays the role of a smuggler who is a lover of Mumbai.
The story begins with a suicide attempt of a senior police officer named Agnel. He then narrates the story to his senior and so the movie gets its name Once Upon a Time in Mumbai due to its narrative sense.
Sultan reached Mumbai hiding in a boat and due to his cute and innocent face and heart winning attitude he gets work in a factory. With age he starts doing illegal things, the things which the govt. banned and reaches the highest rank in Mumbai.
Mumbai is shown dominated by 4 influential persons and Sultan is the bond between them who separates them from fighting and prevents the police from doing anything as a result of this unity. Sultan is shown as a helping person who helps those who don't get justice from the law. All poors come to him for their problems. So, he is shown as the hero. Sultan never ruined Mumbai although he did illegal works. He had created a network under him but forbade the use of guns in his work.
The other major character shown is Shoaib, who also wants to be a big and rich man but his aggressiveness and wrong attitude is the only drawback in him.
He's shown to be in love with Mumtaz a worker in a Jewellery shop. Shoaib somehow reaches Sultan and his wits help him win his confidence.
Sultan is shown in relation with a lead film actress Rehana. Sultan goes to Delhi to meet a minister, as he wanted to join Politics, while handing over his position and powers to Shoaib while Shoaib misuses his new powers thereby creating bloodsheds and other wrong things. Hence when Sultan comes to know about this, he slaps him in front of all. This really hurts him and his dream to capture Mumbai. After this something expected happens i.e an enemy asks Shoaib to shake hand with him and kill Sultan in a rally. So, In the end Sultan dies and Mumbai drowns in bloodshed and bomb blasts done by a Don who controls everything from outside India, and he is Shoaib. The role of Agnel is also good as he does everything to stop Sultan while he promotes Shoaib by not punishing him as he was the son of his junior. So, the start is shown with a suicide attempt by him as he thinks he only is responsible for all this and explains everything to his senior as Once Upon a Time in Mumbai.
