Love is the answer

Love, Parenting

The mother of a twenty year old youth was gradually becoming a nervous wreck because her only son was going astray. She attended several healing services and retreats and never ceased praying for his reform. To crown it all, her husband blamed her saying she mothered and pampered him excessively which caused him to stray.

Unable to face criticism from her spouse and family, and having exhausted all methods of correction, the mother turned in desperation to find solace in the Word of God which she found in: "Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; It is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; It is not irritable or resentful; It does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things believe all things, hope all things, endures all things" (1Cor 13:4-7).

She read this passage daily and pondered over it until it dawned on her that, as parents neither she nor her husband really understood the problems their son faced at crucial age. Their son needed love that transpired understanding, not futile corrections and cheap advice with a number of dos and don'ts. He had to be appreciated for the good he displayed rather than be condemned for every mistake he made. He wanted to share his problems without being voluntarily told how to handle them. He sought for an assurance from loving parents rather than to live in fear and dependence on them.

Love was the answer that would change their son. When the parents' attitude changed to resignation, tolerance, acceptance, assurance and love, the son surprised them by embracing them and saying: "I love you mum and dad."

Reflection
Parents often forget they were children. They need their parents to remind them.

When all else fails, try love.
