General information about Mumbai
Welcome to Mumbai. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is the Capital of the State of Maharashtra in India. Mumbai is one of the most populous cities in the World and the city Proper has a huge population of 14 Million People.
Together with Navi Mumbai and Thane District, the Urban Agglomeration of 19 Million People and the number is ever rising.
As of the year 2009, Mumbai is now known as a Alpha World City
History of Mumbai
Old Bombay is a aggregation of seven Islands which are
1. Isle of Bombay 2. Colaba 3. Old Woman's Island (Little Colaba) 4. Mahim 5. Mazagaon 6. Parel 7. Worli
Trombay and Salsette were also merged by Land Reclamation in to form the Greater Bombay.
The Islands which are not merged into the main land are:
1. Gharapuri Island/Elephanta Island 2. Butcher Island 3. Middle Ground Coastal Battery 4. Oyster Rock 5. East Ground
These islands were a home for the fishing colonies which were the old time native people of Kakamuchee or Galajunkja.
Later under the ruling of the Portugal, they gave various names of which Galajunkja was finally known as Bambaim. Then as Bambaim was gifted to the British East India Company, they anglicized it to Bombay. Bombay had its own versions of Old Bombay, Greater Bombay and the n Bombay itself which was changed to Mumbai in November 1995.
Mumbai or Mambai is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba which represents the Koli Goddess Mumbai-Devi which means Aai in Marathi - The Mother. Mumbai is known as Bambai in Hindi Language.
